Summer is the perfect time to get out and enjoy the beautiful weather on your bike. And here in the Denver area, we have miles upon miles of trails to explore. If you aren’t careful, though, a day on your bike could lead to years of pain or disability. Before you head out on your next adventure, check out these biking safety tips.
5 Biking Safety Tips to Prevent Injuries
Make Sure Your Equipment is Safe
Before heading on, especially on a long ride, make sure your equipment is in good condition. Make sure your brakes, chain, tires and other components are all in good working order. If you aren’t much a bike mechanic, have your inspected and tuned up at a local bike shop. The Denver area is a very active community for cyclers, and you will have no trouble finding someone who can help.
Stay Visible
Brightly colored cycling clothes are more than just a fashion statement. They also help make you more visible to drivers and other bikers. Add a light to your front handle bar, and install a tail light on the back. Basic light kits are affordable, and they go a long way toward making you more visible.
Learn the Rules of the Road
Make sure you know the rules of the road where you’re biking. In Colorado, cyclists and motorists share the same responsibilities and rights on the road. If you’re biking on a trail, practice good etiquette, and make yourself aware of any specific rules that may apply where you are.
Communicate
Use hand signals to communicate direction changes with those around you. When passing other riders, it’s also smart to make sure of verbal signals. While you might enjoy listening to your favorite music while you ride, using headphones is not advised. It’s best to keep your ears open so others can communicate with you.
Make Sure You’re Physically Fit Enough to Ride
Getting your body ready for bike riding takes time. If you aren’t already a cyclist, you need to build stamina and your tolerance for sitting. If you aren’t sure if you are healthy enough to start biking, consult with a doctor.
