Every year, more than 20 million children and adults suffer from concussions, mild traumatic brain injuries (TBI), or head trauma, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). These prevalent problems are caused by falls, sports injuries, car accidents, and blunt force trauma, and they frequently impair employment, school, and even routine day-to-day activities.

Allow us to assist you if you or a loved one has experienced a concussion and are battling dizziness or other symptoms. At Denver Physical Medicine & Rehab, we provide vestibular rehabilitation in Denver to assist patients in recovering from these common ailments and returning to normal life.

Symptoms of Vestibular Dysfunction in Post-Concussion Patients

Some of the many symptoms of post-concussion vestibular dysfunction, which can persist for several months or even years without treatment, include:

  • Dizziness
  • Imbalance
  • Eye strain
  • Blurred vision
  • Nausea and/or vomiting
  • Vertigo
  • Uncontrollable, rapid eye movement
  • Motion sickness
  • Postural instability
  • Abnormal gait
  • Spatial impairment

What Is Vestibular Rehabilitation?

Vestibular rehab, also known as “concussion rehab,” is a treatment protocol that focuses on strengthening the link between the brain, eyes, inner ear, muscles, and nerves. It’s most commonly used in post-concussion patients, but it may also be used to address symptoms caused by certain brain injuries.

Because the most common vestibular dysfunction symptoms can be caused by a variety of factors, we must do a complete examination before beginning therapy. During a vestibular rehabilitation exam, we look at posture, balance, and the strength and range of motion of the neck. We also look for motion-induced dizziness and evaluate ocular movements and the ability of the eyes to remain focused during head movement.

What You Can Expect

Once we’ve confirmed that your vestibular dysfunction was caused by a concussion or other head injury, we’ll devise a treatment plan suited to your specific requirements. Your vestibular rehabilitation program may involve a range of exercises, balance training, and other activities. Treatment typically lasts 4-6 weeks, during which time you’ll notice a reduction in your symptoms. Our objective is to make each patient as near to symptom-free as possible so that they may resume their lives.
