PRP Injection – Platelet-Rich Plasma Injection

At Denver Physical Medicine, we are always looking for new ways to help our patients overcome chronic and acute pain and live fuller, healthier lives. One of our latest treatments, PRP injection, allows us to ease our patients’ pain using cells from their own bodies.

PRP, or platelet rich plasma, injections are a revolutionary pain relief treatment that promotes healing and helps regenerate soft tissue. Platelets contain large amounts of proteins known as growth factors, and when spun in a centrifuge, the concentration of these cells becomes higher. When injected directly into the site of an injury, the platelet rich plasma stimulates healing and encourages the growth of healthy tissue.

What is PRP?

PRP is blood that has been spun in a centrifuge at high speeds. This separates it and produces a high concentration of platelets, which act as your body’s natural clotting cells. The growth factors in platelets act as powerful healing cells, and they help stimulate wound healing and facilitate pain reduction.

How Are PRP Injections Performed?

PRP injections are made using your own blood, so the first step is obtaining a small sample. We then separate the platelets to increase their concentration. The platelet rich plasma is then combined with the residual blood before being injected directly to the affected body part. The entire procedure generally takes one to two hours, and there is a very low risk of side effects since your own blood is used.

What Conditions Do PRP Injections Treat?

Research relating to PRP injections is ongoing, but clinical studies indicate that PRP injections are effective in the treatment of tendon and ligament injuries, back pain, torn muscles, arthritis, Achilles tendon tears and fractures. It also provides effective pain relief for many patients who have undergone surgery.

Many patients who have gotten PRP injections report significantly less pain right away and increased mobility in the affected area.
